firefox used to be the fastest. now, firefox has dropped the ball. resting on its laurels as the internet explorer-killer for its security and efficiency, firefox has become bloated over the years. sure, the security and web standards are still there, but with a fast-growing, internet savvy public, people are no longer settling for whatever they can get their hands on. nowadays, there is a browser for everyone. and in terms of speed, an advertising cornerstone that firefox used so well over the years to gain its significant 25% market share, firefox is finding itself the fat kid in the race. by a significant margin. aside from a mature and well-developed extensions library, it is becoming apparent that there is little that firefox has over the competition nowadays.
setup:
- windows 7, 64-bit, superfetch disabled
- amd 965 black edition, 8gb ram, stock speeds/clocks
- browser caches cleared, google.ca set as homepage, no addons/extensions/plugins/tweaks to browsers
- passmark apptimer for timings
- internet explorer 8 64bit was added as a reference point. once browsers are all 64bit, improvements in performance should be significant.
