vancouver 2010 olympic recap
Mar 1st
what a fucking game. to anyone who tuned out after canada got a 2 – 0 lead, you missed out on one of the greatest finishes in olympic hockey history. this entire country exploded into street parties and debauchery. i’m pretty depressed now that the olympics are over. i never watched curling more intensely in my entire life. or figure skating, for that matter.
some favourite moments from the 2010 vancouver olympics:
mellisa hollingsworth breaks canada’s heart with her tearful apology after finishing 5th in women’s skeleton. she had been leading after 3 runs, and a costly mistake in the final run costed her gold (and medal contention). the tears streaming down that pretty brunette’s face captured the pressure that canada’s athletes were under at their own games in vancouver. she had nothing to apologize for. video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsasQNZayd8

VEXED DATING TIPS FOR GUYS WHO ARE COMFORTABLE BEING JERKS
1. LANDING A HOT CHICK. it’s the same old story. every time you see some balding computer engineer, advancing the cause of nerds everywhere, walking arm in arm with some drop dead gorgeous bombshell, you ask yourself: HOW THE FUCK IS THAT POSSIBLE? the obvious answer is that he must be rich. however, there is also the untalked about aspect: girls and their self-esteem.
the natural force of shallowness that god has given ensures that there will always be at least a handful of goodlooking people in the world. people tend to hang out with other people who are roughly equal in physical attractiveness. that’s why the jocks are better looking than you, and all your friends look like anyone you see in a national geographic magazine, none of whom you would ever consider fucking.

cairo shell — a spiffy shell replacement for windows
Feb 20th
cairo shell screenshots:
tired of the way your desktop looks? sick of how no matter what you do with the windows themes, it always still looks like… well… windows? consider replacing your shell. to most people, a desktop shell generally refers to your start menu and desktop icons, but essentially, it’s just a graphical layer that makes it easier to use your computer. as such, there are a lot of different shells, with a lot of different looks. some of the more popular ones include:
- litestep (easily the most popular)
- blackbox/bblean (my personal favourite)
- emerge desktop (a little high maintenance to get it to look nice)
is jon stewart’s “the daily show” hurting democracy?
Feb 19th
when jon stewart took over the reins of the daily show in 1999, i was a sophomore in high school. i followed his show throughout my time in college and he became one of my biggest influences. he is one of the few voices in mainstream american media who consistently points out the bullshit and contradictions of established news organizations — probably the single biggest reason why he resonates with my demographic of cynical 18 – 35 year olds. there is no way jon stewart’s daily show is hurting democracy because it frames its issues in a way that calls into question the integrity of mainstream media — nobody else on television does this. at the same time, i do believe he also caters to a segment of the population who actually believe not giving a shit is a valid political opinion — which is bad. but bottom line is simple: people who watch and enjoy jon stewart are generally knowledgeable, otherwise the jokes would not make any sense — you do need some background knowledge and context to actually understand why his show is so cleverly written and fucking hilarious.
