cairo shell — a spiffy shell replacement for windows
Feb 20th
cairo shell screenshots:
tired of the way your desktop looks? sick of how no matter what you do with the windows themes, it always still looks like… well… windows? consider replacing your shell. to most people, a desktop shell generally refers to your start menu and desktop icons, but essentially, it’s just a graphical layer that makes it easier to use your computer. as such, there are a lot of different shells, with a lot of different looks. some of the more popular ones include:
- litestep (easily the most popular)
- blackbox/bblean (my personal favourite)
- emerge desktop (a little high maintenance to get it to look nice)
firefox is the slowest browser.
Feb 9th
firefox used to be the fastest. now, firefox has dropped the ball. resting on its laurels as the internet explorer-killer for its security and efficiency, firefox has become bloated over the years. sure, the security and web standards are still there, but with a fast-growing, internet savvy public, people are no longer settling for whatever they can get their hands on. nowadays, there is a browser for everyone. and in terms of speed, an advertising cornerstone that firefox used so well over the years to gain its significant 25% market share, firefox is finding itself the fat kid in the race. by a significant margin. aside from a mature and well-developed extensions library, it is becoming apparent that there is little that firefox has over the competition nowadays.
MOUSE optimization — 1000 hz mouse polling on 64 bit systems.
Jan 11th
alright, so in case you might have missed it, all the old mouse optimization tutorials and the DLL files you’re supposed to replace won’t work with your brand new windows 7 64-bit operating system. 64-bit operating systems have pretty much become standard now, and applications have come out to enable you to change your mouse polling from the standard 125hz to 1000hz. why is this important? because it cuts down the latency (aka “lag”) from 8ms to 1ms. while a 7ms difference may not seem like much, if you’re like any gamer that i’ve met, you will take even the tiniest optimizations because over time, small little tweaks like this do end up making a difference over the long hall. (however, if you do have a 32-bit operating system and still want to optimize your mouse, keep reading. i’ll be covering both 64 bit and 32 bit windows flavours in this post.)
HOWTO unlock windows 7 god mode.
Jan 10th
alright, so it’s not as cool as the konami code, but microsoft has a terrible habit of dumbing down their operating systems lately that causes headaches for people who know what the hell they’re doing (think UAC, hidden administrator on vista, among other things). i guess it’s a security trade-off considering how many retards there are. but news has come out that besides the separate administrator account on windows 7, there’s an even HIGHER level of access that microsoft has cleverly named “god mode”. the upside: do whatever you want. the downside: apparently, it might cause 64-bit implementations to go apeshit. really wish microsoft could get it right one day.
